How to show file types or extensions in Windows Explorer in Windows 7

Published March 18, 2013

Windows does not display file types by default but can be modified to do so. It can be frustrating to look for files and only see the prefix of the name, while the extension tells us quickly what type of file it is and helps us to determine which application can open it.

In order to modify the default settings, follow these steps:

1.  Open My Computer or Windows Explorer, click on Organize in the top left corner and then click on Folder and search options.

2.  Now click on View, then uncheck the box for the line “Hide extensions for known file type”. Click OK.

The file extensions are now displayed.
